Flygt Mechanical Seal Leakage: Diagnose Before Replacing Parts

When a Flygt pump reports a seal alarm or water ingress, review the chamber fluid, leakage trend and exact pump model before requesting repair parts.

Assess a suspected Flygt mechanical-seal leak using seal-chamber inspection, alarm history and the manual for the exact model. One observation of cloudy oil is not enough to diagnose a failure. Isolate the equipment, identify where liquid is entering, and then verify the seal arrangement and parts.

Which warning signs deserve attention?

Record the condition and drained volume of oil or barrier fluid, inspection-chamber or leakage alarms, and whether liquid has entered the stator chamber. A small amount of moisture can occur in an oil-buffered seal chamber; its trend and the limits in the model-specific manual matter more than colour alone.

What should maintenance personnel inspect?

  1. Stop, lock out and isolate the equipment, then lift the pump safely. Electrical work, lifting and confined-space entry must follow the manual for the exact Flygt model and site procedures.
  2. Compare chamber fluid with the previous maintenance record. Check plugs, gaskets, alarm wiring and sensors, and determine whether the suspected entry path is the outer seal, inner seal or another opening.
  3. Have qualified personnel inspect seal faces, the shaft and mating surfaces according to the manual. If leakage recurs, investigate vibration, abrasive solids, cavitation and frequent starts so that replacing the seal does not leave the underlying cause unresolved.

When should replacement be considered?

An alarm before a planned inspection, increasing liquid ingress or liquid on the motor side requires prompt assessment under the model-specific manual. A small, stable amount of moisture is not a universal replacement threshold. Do not open a bedded-in seal merely to look at it: the faces may not reseat reliably.

What should a seal enquiry include?

Provide the complete Flygt model and serial number, nameplate and old-seal photographs, inner or outer seal position, chamber arrangement, liquid and solids details, oil or barrier-fluid inspection results, alarm history and maintenance findings. Verify the matching seals, gaskets and specified chamber fluid; price depends on the confirmed configuration and repair scope.

Frequently asked questions

Does milky oil always mean that a seal has failed?

Not necessarily. Assess water content, its trend and the limits in the exact model manual. Repeated or increasing water ingress needs investigation.

Can a seal be ordered from shaft diameter alone?

No. Seal position, construction, materials and pump configuration must match the parts information for the serial number.
